THE EPHEMERA OF BUSINESS

My love of old newspaper advertisements keeps growing. I try to stay with items pre-1860 if I can. I recently purchased three Shipping & Commercial List newspapers from 1841. This paper one of the most successful and influential of the shipping papers printed in New York. It was published on Wednesday and Saturday mornings by W. Burritt & EB Clayton located on Wall Street.  Here are some neat ads from the newspapers. Julius W. Orr was born in Ireland in 1815. He was brought to the U.S. as a child. He studied word engraver in New York and later established his own engraving business.

I have had a hard time trying to come up with a title for these graphic billheads. All of them have a portrait of what we may assume, is/are the proprietor of the business. All of them men, of course, not that women owned businesses weren't out there.
